LASTING. Learning how to create beauty with the most incredible dried flowers from @borealblooms at the @slowflowerssummit in Banff. Not all dried florals are equal. GRADUATING CLASS. I wanted to share how easy and enjoyable it is to make prom flowers for the special ones in your life. Can’t believe our youngest is celebrating this milestone already. But here we are. So very, very proud. Our son Theo and his lovely Taryn requested a palette of white. We found lovely calla lilies and orchids for our focals, complimented by lilac, lavender, and lily of the valley from zia Sandy’s garden. Couldn’t be sweeter.

NOT DEAD. Actually these tulips are at a phase I like the most. The present phase. The one they are currently living. Ripe. Open. Soft. I liked their previous iteration too. When they were a bit younger. Turgid. Fresh. Leaning to the sun. So the progress of these tulips may be symbolic of what I think the new account @imnotdead.x is getting at. I suspect the stylish gals in their cleverness leave it open to interpretation. Take what you will. I’m loving the sophisticated sass and gritty elegance of it all. PULL THEM OUT. If you are cutting tulips from your garden to make something lovely, you might as well take the whole plant, bulb and all. If you don’t, most likely next season your tulip will underperform and come up with just leaves or a tiny bud. The bulb needs the nourishment and energy from the plant to prepare for the next season so when you cut them, you are taking that away. This is why most flower farmers treat their spring bulbs as annuals. We have some tulips in our garden that we leave untouched, but mostly I pluck them out and plant again next fall for best results. You can of course arrange your tulips with the bulbs still intact, they tend to last longer that way, or you can cut and arrange. Either way, they are beautiful to bring inside.

Even if it’s not its intended use. I scrounge for mostly vintage, antique and artisanal. But, hey, bathroom accessories work too.

ALWAYS. The optimism of a gardener. You can always find room for more plants. And, our memories are short about how full the garden already is. My spring is filled with stepping over seed trays in the front porch, picking up just a few more flowers even when I’m supposed to be picking up groceries, and warehousing deliveries of specialty blooms until the ground is warm enough to plant. It’s the most hopeful time.

FLEXIBLE FURNITURE TIPS. Home design and decorating is about solving problems. We had a small office area in our bedroom but that is giving way to some built-in closets we’re having installed.This means, again, we have to shuffle the furniture. Our home’s footprint is already filled with items we don’t want to part with. So begins the furniture gymnastics. One piece moves. And another has to be moved somewhere else. This is made easier because many of the pieces we have are interchangeable.

Here are some tips for collecting furnishings that will look good and be purposeful in any room.
-A consistent colour palette. Our collection of taffy-coloured leather chairs, for instance, although in different shapes and styles look pulled together and work in many different rooms.
-Complimentary decorative touches. A cohesive array of rugs, pillow cases, lighting and other accessories that brings it all together is a space unifier. We use a lot of linen, velvet, jute, weathered gold and always black.
-Multipurpose pieces. Our desk is really an antique refractory table. It has also been a dining table, kitchen island and hall console.
-And finally, keep an open mind about space planning. Placing my work desk in our main family living area may not have been my first choice but I have found it works really well. I get to be close to everyone while I do my thing and I can keep one eye on the TV watching the hockey playoffs.

CAREFUL. Thinking about new bathroom tiles? Over the years, we have updated many a restroom. And learned a lot about selecting tiles. It can be a daunting task. There are so many options to tease us. But it’s not an easy do-over once you’ve bathed a room in decorative hardscaping. Here are lessons we’ve learned - you may consider them before taking the plunge. 😘

1. It’s OK to mix high and Low. In this bathroom we used real marble hex tiles on the floor and porcelain marble-patterned tiles on all the walls. It saves money and it works.

2. Large format tiles on the walls, especially in the shower, reduces the number of grout lines. Lots of grout lines = lots of icky build up and cleaning.

3. Speaking of grout, if it works, I opt for darker grout. No matter how much you scrub, over time, lighter grout tends to stain.

4. In a small bathroom, like ours here, don’t be afraid to be dramatic. The room is swathed in black tile. It’s like a very elegant cocoon.

5. And, of course, pick something you’ll love to look at for a long time. I always resist the latest and go for a classic, timeless tile story. It is expensive and causes a lot of upheaval to switch out, so pick wisely.

DIOR VS CHANEL. Have you been watching the new @appletv series The New Look?
It started off a bit slowly, but we are now hooked. Fashion. Romance. Deception. Passion. All rooted in historical events. It’s all so good. The story is compelling and the sets and costumes are gorgeous. Watching the shows reminded me of an exhibition I saw of Dior’s work a number of years ago at the @romtoronto. Along with a number of the most exquisite Dior gowns, a highlight was a floral installation by @fleursdevilles which to this day takes my breath away.

THE LASTING. NOT THE FLEETING. It’s later in January and my feed and inbox are still delivering trend updates on this and that. I’m curious and most often I do hit open and have a peek. Just to see whether I’m in or out. But what I really prefer to do on a cold day is flip through the collection of select design magazines I’ve kept over the years. I turn the pages looking for spaces that continue to inspire. I’m drawn to the decoration that has stood. Rooms that are still on trend, because they never really were a trend to begin with. So as I study my March 2005 issue of @elledecor filled with the most beautiful homes in a range of styles, I’m impressed with the enduring features that sing to me today as much as they did almost twenty years ago. This is my kind of trend report.

PAINT CHIPS. There’s an incredible weathered wall by the beach where we walk Ivy. It has the most beautiful decaying remnants of graffiti that have been exposed to the elements. If only I could replicate this on the walls in our house.

IN A LIGHTER MOOD. Painted the kitchen walls white. My hair too. I talk a lot about the power of paint and its easy-to-harness transformative power. We had left the kitchen beadboard the way we found it. Brown and warm and lovely. It was the perfect backdrop for many images you’ve seen here and in my book. And for many family meals. Conversations and celebrations. But change is good. And I’ve been thinking for some time about reimagining this space. So, layers of whitewash. Oh you can’t do that. Or I could never. Same for the hair. Yes you can. It will be fabulous.
